About Me

~my story~

Ciao! My name is Alex. I’m an art historian and have been crocheting since 2019! Like many crafters, I learned from my gramma, a patient and generous woman who did a little bit of everything. She could sew, draw, knit, crochet, quilt: the whole nine yards and some change. She made baby blankets for all the grandbabies in her congregation and donated hats for veterans and houseless folks. Towards the end of her life, she suffered from dementia and often forgot what I was studying, but we could always crochet together and connect there.

My grandma encouraged our creativity, so I dabbled in everything with her. My passion for crochet grew exponentially in 2019 during my first year of university. Crochet gave me creative freedom and kept me focused during my classes. My very first project was an amigurumi bee! It took me a week of frogging (undoing a project) and starting again before I finally finished Max. It remains one of my favourite projects since I can make a unique gift in about five hours!

~Carousel Crochet~

With Carousel Crochet, my goal is to introduce people to the hobby without a big commitment. For those who have tried pottery and painting and want something new, this is for you! If you’ve been intrigued by crochet kits but aren’t sure about teaching yourself, I would be honored to guide you. Each kit is hand-packed with high-quality yarn, tools, and stuffing by yours truly. The Bee Kits are my pride and joy, and I am delighted to share my love of craft!

As a humanist, I'm committed to keeping CC entirely human-made. In an increasingly automated world, I believe in the power of human connection and creativity. My post backgrounds are hand-painted or photos I’ve taken in gardens around the world, and I personally review every pattern I share to ensure they aren’t AI-generated. You cannot be a foodless chef, just as AI cannot create art because it lacks a soul. Imperfect art is worth more than any mimicry. I believe humans are capable of wondrous things when given the right tools and environment. I hope to share a few tools and create that space, even if it’s only for a few hours.

With gratitude and radiance,

Alex of Carousel Crochet

  • Briefly: Amigurumi is a crochet technique that originated in Japan. It is typically used to create dolls, stuffed animals, and other fun items! The technique focuses on spirals typically created from single crochet variations, such as increases and decreases, offering a ton of creative flexibility!

  • First, bees are fascinating and vital to our environment. I lived and worked on a coffee farm in Kona on the Big Island in Hawaii, so I saw the bees in action! Second, bees have widely been considered sacred and their byproducts such as honey, propolis, and royal jelly have been coveted by elite women for centuries. Bees symbolize harmony, community, and interconnectivity, which align with my personal values. Finally, because they’re adorable and so fun to make!

  • My grandma loved carousels. Any time we saw one, she would give me a quarter or two to ride them. I am an endlessly curious person, often rotating between many ideas and interests, so I’m often immersed in my carousel of projects and plans!
